The sheriff's office, citing restrictions by law on what information can be released about an injury to a child case, confirmed the incident that resulted in charges against Thorn "did not involve his duties as a peace officer," Tuttoilmondo said.

However, The Police News has learned that Child Protective Service became involved after it was reported Thorn had hit his 6-year old son across the face, neck and back with a belt.  He was reportedly living seperately from his wife and children when the incident occurred.

If covicted Thorn could lose his Texas Peace Officers license and be sentenced to 2-10 years in prison.

Comments:

I have known John Thorn many years. He is polite, He is good at his job, His FIT team is something for TC to be proud of. He is a very dedicated person. I do not believe he would ever injure a child. From what I saw on Tv interviews with neighbors they dont believe it either. Who made these accusations in the first place? All the man did was discipline his child the way any good parent should. Unless there is some major physical injury that I have not read about, then all I see is a man being persecuted for being a good parent.

Nothing so far changes my opinon about John. I believe him to be a top notch police officer who does his job professionally and with courtesy. I suspect this comes down to a domestic situation wherein the wife is posturing to get advantage in a divorce settlement and child custody. It would be a sad day for John to lose his license unless it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he indeed did more than discipline his child

Since when is beating a child across the face, neack & back with a belt considered being a good parent?! It's scary that some of you out there think that way!!

Posted by Stella at 2/7/2012 10:57:39 AM

Stella, what's even more scary is there are people like you who believe everything they read on the internet or presented to you by the media.

Posted by Me at 2/7/2012 9:18:58 PM

That is a problem with our news papers and internet presented by media. Many believe what they read, and many times the media do not have all their facts strait. Been through it!If him and his wife are going through a custody battle, since they aren't living together you can assume that. Many women are like that and will say things to be able to get custody and so forth especially when her husband is a cop. I think before everyone assumes we should wait for more information on this case. If it comes out that he did this, then he needs parenting classes, ASAP. Spanking on the rear is acceptable but nothing else.

Posted by barbara at 2/8/2012 7:31:07 AM

Well I do not believe everything I read on the internet nor in the newspaper but, I know there was a complaint, an officer responded and made a report, the report was reveiewed by officers, the report was then reviewed by attorneys for the state and the time was taken to commit words to paper that the officer swore to as facts and were believed to be facts by the states attorney. Then a judge read the probable cause complaint and issued a warrant signed by him/her as believing facts warranted issuance of a warrant to take possession of the body of the person complained about in the probable cause affidavit and report. of course the department could be covering their but by assassinating the officer because he was an officer and letting the criminal justice process determine the "truth" ...which? dunnot, either way the officer is ruined

Posted by mw at 2/8/2012 9:01:14 AM

Oh, and this is the type case any responsible department and D.A. would take before a Grand Jury if there was any question about facts and let the Grand Jury decide. That is if there was any question. Unless no one cared about the officer and profession and "just did it".

Posted by mw at 2/8/2012 9:04:07 AM

Without seeing the incident report, we only have our own notions on what happened. I know Jon, perhaps others who don't, just read the headlines and swallow it whole. Give the system a chance to work, after the actual facts come out, then decide whether it was a case of assault, or discipline.

I was deeply saddened to see this in the news and can only hope for the best for that whole family. On a personal level, I live and work in Texas City and Officer Thorn is one of the most proactive cops I've seen in keeping the community safe. He has made a name for himself in 5 years that some can't accomplish in 20 and does so by staying on the street and constantly working with the people. I've been very impressed with him.
