GALVESTON - Police were dispatched Thursday to investigate a burglary alarm at the Valero station at 3825 Broadway. It was about 1:30 in the morning when they arrived and as is customary the
officers jumped from their cars and fanned out around the building looking for signs of a break-in and making sure the exits are covered in case someone runs from the building.
On this occassion they immediately noticed the building had been broken into through the front door. As they did a search inside the building, 19-year old Eric Jonathan Galvan, 19, who was
apparently hiding somewhere outside, jumped into to one of the police cruisers in the parking lot and sped away.
By the time the officers ran from the store Galvan and the police car were gone. They chose not to shoot at the fleeing felon although they would have been justified.
The police car was found abandoned a short distance away and Galvan was arrested nearby.
In addition to burglary and car theft charges, Galveston also faces charges of Indecency with a Child by Exposure in an unrelated case. He is being held in the Galveston County Jail in lieu of
$120,000 bail.
